HOW-TO: Make Names Display Last Name, Then First
in the MS Outlook Address Book

By default, Microsoft Outlook displays names in its address book by first name, then last name. For most people who use Western languages such as English, this ordering is counter-intuitive and makes the address book much more tedious to use. Fortunately, this is easy to correct, as illustrated here.

1

Start Microsoft Outlook.

2

On the Tools menu, click E-Mail Accounts. Your screen should look something like Figure 1 below.

3

Click View or change existing directories or address books. The screen that displays looks like Figure 2.

4

Click the Next button, located in the lower right corner of the panel. The screen that displays looks like Figure 3.

5

Click the Outlook Address Book item in the large list box. If you have only one address book, it will already be selected as shown above. On the right side of the panel, click the Change... button. The screen that displays next looks like Figure 4.

6

Near the bottom of the panel are two radio buttons inside a box titled "Show names by." Make sure the one on the right, which is labeled File As (Smith, John) is checked, as shown above.

7

Click the Close button at the bottom of the box. The screen shown in Figure 3 displays again.

8

Click the Finish button at the bottom of the panel.

That's it. You are all set.
